SO THAT THE FUTURE CAN MOVE IN

As part of the planning process for the redevelopment and restructuring of the I-Building at Altona Children’s Hospital (AKK), it became evident that the required refurbishment and reconfiguration measures within the existing building could not be implemented in an economically viable manner. Consequently, the central ward building (I-Building) is to be completely demolished and reconstructed in order to ensure modern, future-oriented and safe patient care over the long term.

To maintain uninterrupted care for children and adolescents during the approximately two- to three-year construction period, extensive preparatory and interim measures were developed. These include the creation of replacement areas combined with a sustainable subsequent-use concept, as well as the adaptation of existing building and infrastructure systems. For this purpose, the overall project was divided into the three subprojects “Expansion of Lufthafen”, “Vertical Extension of the Rehabilitation Building”, and “Infrastructure and H-Building”.

The demolition of the existing structure will result in the loss of essential patient rooms, examination areas, ancillary spaces, as well as existing circulation and infrastructure connections. To ensure uninterrupted hospital operations, technical utility supplies will therefore be rerouted, archive and data center areas adapted, and the underground building access and logistics systems reorganized.
In addition, structural modifications will be carried out within the H-Building to provide temporary accommodation for surgical patient rooms, including technical upgrades and new flooring systems. Supplementary measures include the construction of a heated temporary connection route between the central building and the rehabilitation building, as well as temporary emergency escape solutions, in order to ensure the functionality and safety of hospital operations throughout the entire construction period.

We are pleased to provide detailed information on the individual interim measures here.
