CEREMONIAL OPENING OF THE MODERNIZED OPERATING THEATRE COMPLEX AT THE ISRAELITISCHES KRANKENHAUS HAMBURG

Around 200 guests attended the ceremonial opening of the modernized operating theatre complex at the Israelitisches Krankenhaus Hamburg (IK-H) on May 7, including Hamburg’s Senator for Health Melanie Schlotzhauer, representatives from the medical sector, politics, and healthcare industry, as well as Max Warburg, Chairman of the Foundation of the Israelitisches Krankenhaus in Hamburg. Together, they celebrated a significant milestone for Hamburg as a healthcare location.

From our perspective as the responsible planning office, the project marks the successful completion of a technically and organizationally demanding construction task carried out during ongoing hospital operations. Over a construction period of approximately two and a half years, the entire surgical department was comprehensively modernized, expanded, and realigned to meet the requirements of highly specialized robot-assisted surgery – all without interrupting patient care.
“The entire conversion was carried out in two construction phases during ongoing hospital operations and without any interruption to patient care. This represents an extraordinary achievement by our entire team and all project partners involved,” emphasized Marcus Jahn, Managing Director of the Israelitisches Krankenhaus.

The planning focused on highly functional operating areas, optimized workflows, and the highest standards in hygiene, ventilation, climate control, and medical technology. The result is a set of modern operating theatres specifically designed for robot-assisted procedures. This structural modernization now provides the foundation for state-of-the-art medical care, research, and international training in the field of robotic surgery. The area is complemented by new staff and documentation spaces, as well as a completely renewed ventilation and air-conditioning system adapted to changing requirements and regulations.

The ceremonial opening clearly demonstrated the significance of the project for Hamburg’s healthcare sector. The modernization was made possible through funding of more than 15 million euros provided by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg – a clear commitment to the future of high-performance hospital infrastructure and innovative medical technology in Hamburg.

We would like to warmly congratulate the Israelitisches Krankenhaus on the successful opening of the new operating theatre complex and thank all project participants for the trusting and collaborative cooperation. As our Managing Director, Marc Ewers, stated in his speech: “We sincerely hope that, at the end of the day, everyone walking through the new operating theatre complex will look back positively on this shared journey and will carry out the important work for patients there with enthusiasm and dedication. Enjoyment in one’s work creates quality – and that is exactly what we aimed to deliver at the end of this certainly not always easy construction period. A certain degree of hardship is probably part of every construction project – perhaps also so that, in the end, one can be twice as happy: about the result and about reaching the end of a demanding process.”

With this in mind, we wish the entire IK-H team every success in the future use of the new facilities, continued outstanding medical outcomes for the people treated there within a pleasant working environment, and many further positive developments in research, innovation, and patient care.
