Accessible entrance to the listed S-Haus at AKK from now on

To enable accessible entrance for the young patients and visitors who want to visit the Altona Children’s Hospital (AKK) and, in particular, the former infant clinic (S-Haus) which now houses, among other things, the psychosomatic day clinic and the medical care centre, we have extended the existing interior lift from the elevated ground floor to the main entrance near the car park and brought it up to the latest technical standard.
It was not easy at all – because our aim was to integrate the external entrance and exit of the lift into the façade of the listed building without detracting from the attractive external appearance of the façade.

Our solution of installing a lift door in the existing external wall that matches the colours and materials of the surrounding existing buildings of the AKK building complex, in particular the entrance door installed there and the surrounding design elements, was approved by the City of Hamburg, the Department of Economics, Building and the Environment, and the Office for the Preservation of Historical and Artistic Monuments, and was able to be implemented as planned.

You might now well believe that the lift entrance has always been part of the façade.
