The Catholic Marien Hospital gGmbH is planning the construction of a Medical Device Reprocessing Unit (AEMP) to meet the growing demand for sterilized medical supplies for the hospital. This project has been publicly tendered through a VgV process. We applied as the general planner for this competition and are very pleased that we were able to convince all parties involved to implement this project based on our extensive experience.
The hospital’s AEMP is currently located in Building 1, between the operating theater and the intensive care unit, but unfortunately, this location has no available capacity reserves. Therefore, it will be relocated to a central location in the basement of Building 1. The former hospital kitchen there, after the conversion of food supply, offers a vacant space with sufficient room and is very well suited for housing the hospital's sterilization department. The expansion will be implemented during ongoing operations, which requires very detailed construction logistics to adhere to tight constraints.
A particularly challenging aspect of this project is the placement of technical systems for medical devices and the devices themselves – both within the future AEMP area, due to the low ceiling height, many beams, and over 100-year-old building structures, and in the basement below, which is designed as a "submarine control center" and requires customized solutions that must still be economically viable in the future and comply with current technical regulations. Additionally, this must be done against the backdrop of heritage protection requirements for the building itself.
We have gladly taken on this challenge and look forward to working with the Marien Hospital, the supporting social authority, and the other planning participants!
